Jazz Spotlight: ViJay Iyer

Jazz Spotlight shines on Vijay Iyer

Vijay Iyer (born October 26, 1971) is an American jazz pianist, composer, bandleader, producer, electronic musician, and writer based in New York City. He is a 2013 MacArthur Fellow. (Review and sample links included. below)

ViJay Iyer composes and plays some wonderful music from standard jazz to symphonic jazz  and with all size groups from solo to large group. His jazz is still emerging and I think he represents some of the jazz of the future. On Far From over you will hear various styles from familiar jazz grooves to far out symphonic sounds. You will need a little patience as some of the music is an intense experience, but it is well worth cultivating a taste for Iyer. Here’s what Pitchfork magazine had to say:

“On Far From Over, he’s debuting yet another lineup: a sextet populated by contemporary-jazz all-stars like alto saxophonist Steve Lehman and drummer Tyshawn Sorey. But Iyer’s compositional range here is even more notable than this latest permutation of personnel. The 10-track, nearly hour-long album offers one of the bandleader’s strongest and most varied programs—one in which feverish ensemble writing hangs together with groove-oriented tracks and sparer experimental textures.” from review by Pitchfork.
